I just got a new bridge, and my smile looks great. Will Zoom make my whole smile whiter?

Saturday, October 31st, 2009

I recently got a new dental bridge to replace two missing teeth on the upper left side. I can’t believe how much better my smile looks! Even though my budget is tight, I’d like to really make my smile shine, and am thinking about doing some whitening. The teeth in my new bridge match my teeth pretty well – will the whitening process work on those teeth, too?

–Dave in Mishawaka

Dear Dave -

This is one of those times when I wish you would have asked this question BEFORE you had the bridge work done. The material used to create the false teeth in your bridge is almost certainly porcelain or ceramic, and unfortunately, Zoom whitening does not affect the color of those materials. Zoom whitening removes the surface stains that darken the color of your natural teeth – the false teeth in your veneers are that color all the way through.

If you are really determined to keep improving your smile, I strongly recommend you seek the services of an expert cosmetic dentist who will consider such questions before completing the design of your bridge or other dental work. Unless there is a structural problem with your current bridge, I am afraid you have no recourse but to accept the color it is or to have it replaced after you whiten your natural teeth.

Will Zoom have any effect on tetracycline stains?

I have tetracycline stains on my teeth. Will ZOOM have any effect on it?
- Suzanne in New Jersey

Suzanne,
Tetracycline stains occur because someone took tetracycline antibiotics while the permanent teeth were forming, which would generally be before age 12. What happens is the tetracycline itself actually becomes a part of the dentin of the tooth. It results in a deep, dark brown or gray stain.

These stains are very difficult to remove. Yes, Zoom Whitening will lighten the stains. If you do enough Zoom treatments, it can whiten them quite a bit. They won’t ever be bright, sparkly white, but they will be a definite improvement. Or you can do the regular at home whitening treatments and then just buy enough refills to continue bleaching for several months.

The best treatment for tetracycline stains is to have porcelain veneers to cover over them. But I’d be careful with what dentist you ask to do this. The dentist needs quite a bit of experience with cosmetic dentistry, because it is difficult to cover over the dark stain of the teeth and still have it look lifelike.

Can I whiten my porcelain Veneers?
- Stephanie

Dear Stephanie,
Actually no. A porcelain veneer should not change color. If a patient wants to have whiter teeth they should whiten their natural teeth first then match their porcelain veneers to the new whiter color of the surrounding teeth. The veneer will remain the desired color.

Does bleaching damage your teeth and gums?
- Bob

Bob,
Bleaching is very safe for teeth and gums when administered properly and well monitored. The Zoom Whitening technique, done in the office, protects the gums by an isolation process (pictured on this website under Zoom Whitening) and is closely monitored during the whitening procedure. Patients who choose the home method receive custom made trays to fit their mouth and teeth, and very specific instruction for the time and placement of the whitening gel to ensure maximum whitening and comfort. In addition, it is important to follow-up with an in office check along the way so that the process can be properly monitored for effectiveness.
