Gum Disease

Gum disease is a silent disease that progresses often undetected. It attacks the attachment of your teeth to the jaw. If left untreated, your teeth can become loose and fall out.

At Dr. Goldstein's office, we take this disease seriously and will recommend treatment when it is necessary.

The warning signs of gum disease

Beware of the following signs. They may indicate that you have gum disease and need treatment. However, realize that sometimes there are no symptoms at all. The only sure way to find out is with a thorough dental examination with x-rays:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed when you brush
  • Pus coming from the sulcus (the groove between your teeth and the surrounding gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth
  • Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
  • Any unusual movement in your teeth—such as if they change position or change the way they fit together when you bite
  • A change in the fit of removable partial dentures

If you have any of these symptoms, come see us. But if you don't have any of these symptoms, it's not an indication that you don't have gum disease, because sometimes there are no symptoms at all.
